Few places in the Yucatan Peninsula are as recognizable as Chichen Itza, the Maya city whose stone buildings rose over several centuries before the Spanish arrived. This view shows the Temple of the Three Lintels, named for the carved stone lintels that once spanned its doorways. By 1932 the site drew steady numbers of visitors, and the Carnegie Institution had been working among its ruins since the mid-1920s. The photographer, Laura Gilpin, was known for her attention to landscape and to the texture of stone under strong light, which gives this temple its solid, quiet presence.
