Three pyramids rise above the desert edge at Giza, with a village crowding the ground in the foreground, a juxtaposition of ancient monument and everyday rural life. The photograph is attributed to A. Beato, most likely Antonio Beato, an Italian-born photographer who worked in Egypt and sold views of its monuments to the growing number of European and American travelers of the late 1800s. The date, given as the 1880s, comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified. Images like this one helped shape Western ideas of Egypt, so it is worth noticing how the village and the pyramids share the same frame.
