Of all the views that photographers carried back from Egypt, this one puts the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx side by side, the two monuments that most often define the Giza plateau in the imagination. The photograph is attributed to Francis Frith, the English photographer who made several trips up the Nile in the 1850s and whose Egyptian images were widely reproduced as plates in travel books, including the volume *Lower Egypt and Thebes* in which this view appeared. Frith's work helped shape how Victorian audiences pictured ancient Egypt, offering a sense of scale and distance that engravings often flattened. The record itself lacks a firm date, so its exact moment of making is uncertain.
