Carved from the limestone bedrock of the Giza plateau, the Sphinx combines a lion's body with a human head, and this view shows it as travelers of the period saw it, with sand drifted high around its body. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by the American travel writer Frank G. Carpenter, whose newspaper letters and lectures brought images of distant countries to readers at home. Most scholars attribute the monument to the reign of Khafre, around 2500 B.C., which makes it one of the oldest large sculptures still standing.
