Camel riders in the foreground, identified on the card as Nubian soldiers, set this stereograph apart from the many pyramid views Underwood & Underwood sold. Behind them rises the Step Pyramid, built for the pharaoh Djoser at Saqqara around 2650 B.C. It is among the earliest large stone monuments in Egypt, though the card's claim that it is the most ancient structure in the world overstates the case. Made around 1896, when foreign travel to Egypt was growing, the card was meant for home viewers who explored distant places through a stereoscope.
