Five American soldiers stand together before a thatched-roof hut, a modest structure of the kind common in the Philippine countryside and one that the army adapted for its own camps in 1899. That year the newly acquired islands became the scene of the Philippine-American War, which broke out in February after Filipino forces under Emilio Aguinaldo turned against the American troops who had arrived following the Treaty of Paris. Photographs like this one, showing soldiers at rest in makeshift quarters, offer a glimpse of daily routine during a conflict that was still taking shape.
