An advanced ambulance station on the Piave River, with American Red Cross workers standing in gas masks, sets this scene apart from views of the front lines alone. The Piave line saw heavy fighting, including the Austro-Hungarian offensive of June 1918 that Italian forces repulsed, and gas was a feared weapon on every front, so the masks show how seriously aid crews took the threat of chemical attack near the lines. The record dates the picture only to between 1914 and 1918, so its exact moment remains unverified.
