Italian and American Red Cross officers stand together at a gun position on Monte Grappa in this 1918 view, placing relief work within sight of the front. The mountain, a rugged massif in northeastern Italy, became a defensive anchor after the Italian army's retreat following the Caporetto defeat in late 1917, and it held against Austro-Hungarian offensives in 1918. The American Red Cross was active in Italy that year, supporting Italian troops and civilians. The record comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified, so the individuals shown and the exact circumstances should be read with that in mind.
