Wheeled canteens, the carts that brought hot drinks and simple supplies toward soldiers, are the focus here, shown on the Italian Front in 1918. The American Red Cross ran canteen and relief services in Italy during the last year of the war, when Italian and Allied forces were holding out against the Austro-Hungarian army along mountain and river positions. Volunteers at these carts offered coffee, chocolate, and cigarettes, small comforts that meant a great deal to men far from home. The caption card for this print is unverified, so the exact unit and location are uncertain, but the picture records an important part of wartime relief work.
