A wrecked American Red Cross ambulance, hitched to a truck and dragged along a road, is the particular subject here, and the photograph catches the sort of mishap that was routine on the Italian Front during the First World War. American volunteers and relief workers served with Italian forces and civilian aid efforts there, and their ambulances were pushed hard over mountain roads and shelled supply routes, so breakdowns and wrecks were common. The record dates the print only to between 1914 and 1918, and its caption card is unverified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain. Still, the image offers a useful glimpse of the wartime motor transport that kept casualties moving from the front lines to aid stations.
