This photograph places American Red Cross workers at an ambulance advanced post on the Piave River, where they lift a wounded soldier onto a stretcher beside a waiting ambulance. The Piave became a key defensive line for Italy after the army's defeat at Caporetto in late 1917, and fighting along the river in 1918 was among the costliest of the Italian campaign. The caption card dates the picture only to a span between 1914 and 1918, so the exact day is unknown. The scene shows the hands-on work of moving injured men from the front toward medical care.
