Leafy foliage laid across the top of this trench is what sets the picture apart from other views of American troops in France in 1918. Camouflage of this kind hid dugouts and earthworks from enemy aircraft and observation posts, which could easily spot bare ground. The photograph comes from the U.S. Army Signal Corps, whose photographers recorded Western Front operations during the final year of the war, when American units were fighting alongside Allied forces.
