In France, disabled soldiers were trained in two popular trades, cabinet-making and tailoring, according to this 1919 poster, which the record ties to Lyons for cabinet-making and Paris for tailoring. It was produced for an exhibit by the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men, shown alongside the institute's work for the blind. Posters like this one appeared in the years after the First World War, when rehabilitation programs aimed to give wounded men skilled work and a livelihood rather than lifelong dependence.
