Three British soldiers crouch in a trench under fire, captured on a stereo card that was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth. The card is dated to about August 1916, when the Western Front was locked in the grinding trench fighting that defined much of the war. Stereographs like this were popular at home, bringing the war into parlors for civilian viewers. Many wartime images of this kind were carefully staged or reconstructed, so the scene is best read as a view of trench life rather than a record of one moment.
