Set up inside the broken walls of a French church, this American army field hospital shows how medical units in 1918 often worked in whatever shelter the front had left standing. Churches and other stone buildings were common choices because their thick walls offered some protection from shellfire and their open floors could hold cots and equipment. The picture was taken by an Army Signal Corps photographer, part of the official effort to document American service in the First World War. The catalog card is unverified, so the exact location and date deserve some caution, though 1918 fits the final year of the war, when American units were fighting in France in large numbers.
