Piraeus, the port that served Athens for centuries, is the setting here, and the card's title pointedly sets modern cargo work against an ancient harbor. Themistocles strengthened Piraeus around 480 BC, and the Long Walls linked it to the city, making it the core of Athenian sea power. By 1907, when this stereograph was copyrighted, Piraeus had become Greece's main commercial port, and the freight handling the caption describes reflects that shift. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images give the docks a sense of depth that flat prints of the period could not.
