The subject here is the Paraporti spring and cave at Thebes in Greece, which the caption links to the spring of Ares and to the dragon that Cadmus slew. In Greek legend, that dragon guarded the spring, and Cadmus, the founder of Thebes, killed it before settling the city, so the site carried a mythic weight for visitors. This stereograph was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold paired-image cards for home stereoscope viewers. Such cards gave viewers around 1903 a sense of standing at distant ruins, and this one records a landscape that tied modern travelers to classical stories.
