Children at a food kitchen in Athens set this stereograph apart from other views of the 1897 conflict. The kitchen served Cretan refugees, families displaced by the island's revolt against Ottoman rule, which that year drew Greece and the Ottoman Empire into a brief war. Published by Underwood & Underwood for stereoscope viewing, the card shows how scenes of wartime relief reached armchair audiences far from the fighting.
