Rather than the ruined interior visitors see today, this print shows the Parthenon as reconstructed by the French architect Charles Chipiez, who imagined the temple's interior with its statues and surfaces restored. Chipiez worked with Georges Perrot on a multivolume history of ancient art, and his drawings aimed to show how the building might have looked when new in the fifth century B.C., when Phidias's gold-and-ivory statue of Athena stood inside. Dating to about 1910, the picture records how scholars then pictured Greek temples, a view that later research on ancient painted decoration has since revised in part.
