Athens in about 1901 was a city caught between its ancient monuments and a rapidly modernizing present, and this stereograph captures that tension at street level. The card's title, "Street of the Shoes," points to a commercial strip lined with shops, a glimpse of everyday trade rather than a famous landmark. Issued by the H.C. White Company, a firm known for stereo views of travel destinations, the card was made for viewers who wanted to see distant places through a stereoscope. Its caption, though unverified, places the business activity in Athens in 1901.
