Orphaned children brought from the interior of Asia to Marathon, Greece, gaze at the mountains and the sea, which the caption says they were seeing for the first time. Their arrival belongs to the wartime displacement across the Ottoman lands, and Near East Relief, the American charity founded in 1915, worked to feed and care for such children in Greece and the Near East. Marathon is also the site of the Athenian victory over the Persians in 490 BC, which adds a layer of history to the scene. The print comes from George Grantham Bain's news photograph collection.
