Few views of England's textile towns record the work floor as directly as this stereograph of a woolen factory in Leicester, where the catalog points to women employed at sewing. Leicester was a major center of hosiery and knitted goods, and the clothing and textile trades gave work to large numbers of women in the years after the First World War. Made as a pair of nearly identical photographs for viewing through a stereoscope, the card gives the room a sense of depth. It was also registered for copyright in the United States, which shows that the maker expected an audience beyond England.
