The JA headquarters, photographed in 1907, was the center of a ranch that Charles Goodnight and London investor John George Adair established in the late 1870s on the Texas plains, when open-range cattle ruling the region. Erwin E. Smith, a photographer known for documenting Texas ranch life in the early 1900s, made the print. According to its caption card, which the record notes has not been independently verified, it shows the ranch and its owner. Images like this are useful for seeing the working compound of a large operation just as fencing and railroads were transforming the cattle business.
