Henry VI came to the English throne as an infant in 1422, and his reign was later overshadowed by the Wars of the Roses before he was deposed in 1461 and died in 1471. This engraving is the work of George Vertue, an English engraver and antiquary of the eighteenth century who made many portraits of past monarchs for historical publications. Henry is remembered today for founding Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, but his weak leadership helped open the conflict that divided the crown. The caption card records no date, so the print is best read as a later portrait made for a historical audience rather than a likeness drawn from life.
