Francis I, who reigned as King of France from 1515 to 1547, is shown here in a reproduction of a painting traditionally attributed to François Clouet, the court painter whose portraits helped set the standard for French royal likeness in the 16th century. Francis was a major patron of the arts; he brought Leonardo da Vinci to France and filled the royal palaces with Italian and French work, so a portrait of him carries the weight of a Renaissance court seeking to project power through image. The record notes only one print and no date, so the reproduction's exact origin is uncertain, but the attribution to Clouet ties the image to a celebrated circle of French portraiture.
