Rather than a painted likeness, this halftone reproduces a sculpted portrait of Louis XIV, the French king whose reign ran from 1643 to 1715 and whose court at Versailles set the standard for European royal display. The record links it to the sculptor François Girardon, who worked on royal commissions for the king, and the notes say the print was used as an illustration in a publication about him. Halftone printing, which turned photographs into dots that a press could reproduce, became common in the late 1800s, so the picture is a later reproduction of an earlier work. The record does not give a date for the print itself.
