Few early airships could navigate on their own power, and this engraving shows one that did. It records the electric-powered dirigible that Albert and Gaston Tissandier flew from Auteuil, on the western edge of Paris, on October 8, 1883. The brothers were aeronauts and scientists, and their craft used a battery-driven electric motor to propel itself through the air rather than relying on wind alone. Poyet made the drawing and E. A. Tilly cut the wood engraving, a method that let late nineteenth-century newspapers and books reproduce scenes like this one. The print comes from the Tissandier collection and reflects the 1880s fascination with powered flight.
