A sidewalk café in Paris, photographed around 1939, shows patrons and waiters going about their business on the street, a scene that was everyday life in the city at the time. Café terraces were central to Parisian social life, places where people lingered over coffee, read newspapers and watched the passing crowds, and the picture captures that informal public culture. The date places the scene on the eve of the Second World War, when cafés across the city were soon to change under wartime conditions. Because the record names only the setting and its subjects, the image is best read as a document of ordinary café life in 1930s Paris.
