Beaumarchais, the man named in this print's title, was a Paris watchmaker's son who became one of the most sought-after playwrights of late eighteenth-century France. His comedies *The Barber of Seville* and *The Marriage of Figaro* made him famous, and their sharp social satire put him at odds with the authorities. He was also a secret arms supplier who helped send weapons to the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. The print was made by a Paris lithographer named Delpech, and the process, which had spread through France in the early nineteenth century, allowed portraits like this one to circulate cheaply after the sitter's death in 1799.
