Here the family gathers around the deathbed of George Washington, a scene of his final days at Mount Vernon in Virginia, where he died in December 1799. The print reproduces a painting by the American artist Stearns, transferred to stone by the lithographer Régnier and printed in Paris by Lemercier, a leading French lithographic house of the 1850s. The hand coloring adds warmth to the room and the figures. The image presents the founder as a grieving head of a household, an intimate view that suited mid-nineteenth-century audiences who wanted to see Washington as a familiar, human figure.
