A French drawing-instruction plate from Léon Coignet's *Cours de dessin*, this lithograph shows a seated woman at her work, with the drawing lesson as its subject. Julien drew the stone and the Paris firm Lemercier printed it, and the London publishers Gambart and Junin issued it around 1861, when such manuals were widely used by amateur artists. The sheet's other side carries a drawing by Winslow Homer for *War Songs*, which is why it belongs to the Library's Civil War drawing collection.
