Washington appears here as a working farmer on his Mount Vernon estate, the Virginia plantation where he spent much of his adult life and tried out new agricultural methods. The composition comes from a painting by Stearns, rendered as a color lithograph by Régnier and printed by the Paris firm Lemercier around 1853. The subjects listed for the print point to the enslaved African Americans who labored on the farm, a reminder that the estate's productivity depended on forced labor.
