This engraving shows Alexander II, the Russian emperor who in 1861 ended serfdom across his empire, a reform that made him a notable figure abroad. It reproduces a painting by Alonzo Chappel, an American painter and illustrator, and carries a copyright line in the name of the publisher Johnson, Fry & Co. Printed in 1871, it dates from the middle of Alexander's reign, a decade before his assassination in St. Petersburg in 1881, and shows how he was presented to American audiences during his reform years.
