Hirohito is shown here in a 1926 studio-style portrait, the year he succeeded his father, Emperor Taisho, and took the throne as the 124th emperor of Japan. The photoprint was produced by Underwood & Underwood, a firm best known in the early twentieth century for mass-produced stereo views and press photographs sold to American audiences. The catalog record carries an unverified caption-card date and title, so the exact occasion for the portrait is not confirmed. Still, it captures a moment when Japan's imperial house was entering a new reign and the West was taking growing interest in the country.
