A woman sits directly on the floor, tending food on a grill, a posture that reflects how many Japanese households of the period organized daily life around low surfaces and tatami mats. Cooking over open charcoal heat was a routine part of domestic work, so the scene records ordinary household routine rather than a special occasion. The Library of Congress catalogs the picture in its Kanji Collection and dates it only approximately, to between 1915 and 1925, and the record does not name the photographer or the exact location. It is most useful as a glimpse of everyday kitchen practice in Japan in the 1910s and early 1920s.
