A peasant kneels in prayer before a long row of images of the "God of Light," on the south bank of the Daiya River at Nikko, Japan. Nikko, a mountain town known for its shrines and Buddhist temples, drew many Western visitors in the early 1900s, and the scene reflects the everyday devotion that continued alongside those better-known sites. The stereo card was published by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that produced stereoscopic views for home viewers around 1904. The place and subject details come from the original caption, which the record notes has not been independently verified.
