Few subjects in this set are as specific as a fisherman perched in a bamboo tower, scanning the water for the shoals of fish below. Kamakura, the old seaside capital south of Tokyo, is known for its temples and the great bronze Buddha, but this view turns to the working coast. Such lookout platforms were a common way for coastal fishermen to spot fish before casting their nets. The photograph belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress. The Carpenters were American writers and photographers who traveled widely and sold images and stories to readers in the United States, so their pictures record daily life as Western audiences of the era encountered it.
