Snow covers the upper slopes of Fuji in this view from the northwest, with cloud wrapped around its lower flanks. Stereograph cards like this one, issued by Underwood & Underwood around 1904, carried travel scenes from distant places into American parlors, where a hand viewer fused the two side-by-side images into a single view with depth. Fuji, a volcano about 12,400 feet high, has been revered in Japan for centuries as a sacred mountain and a pilgrimage site, and it became a favorite subject for artists and photographers. The record's caption details are unverified, so the exact vantage point should be read as the publisher's description.
