Winnowing, the step that separates rice grain from its chaff, is the particular subject here, shown both as hand labor and as mechanized work in Japan. The record dates the print to around 1935, though it carries a question mark and is based on an unverified caption card, so that date should be read with some caution. Rice was the foundation of rural Japanese life and agriculture in this period, and a side-by-side view of older hand methods and newer equipment captures a farming economy in transition. The picture is worth studying for the tools, the posture of the workers, and the way one harvest task could be done in two very different ways.
