Rice fields outside Manila make the subject here, and the stereograph's double image gives the scene an unusual depth for its time. The card was issued by the Standard Scenic Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1906, part of a large commercial trade in stereoviews that carried views of distant lands into American parlors. Such cards were viewed through a hand stereoscope, and the pair of photographs fused into a single three-dimensional scene. Worth noticing is the work itself: farmers readying wet paddies by hand, a labor-intensive routine that the card presents as a picture of everyday life in the Philippines during the early American colonial period.
