The Luneta, the broad seaside park along Manila Bay, is shown here at sunset with its bandstand and promenade. The ground had earlier been an open field where Spanish colonial authorities carried out executions, including the 1896 execution of the nationalist writer José Rizal. Under the American administration that followed the Spanish-American War, the area was reshaped into a public park where Manila families gathered for evening strolls and band concerts. The print comes from the Arthur Stanley Riggs collection, and its date is given only as a rough estimate between 1900 and 1925.
