Hemp from the Philippines, known as abacá or Manila hemp, was prized for its strength and resistance to salt water, which made it the preferred material for ship cordage. This stereograph, copyrighted by the Keystone View Company around 1906, shows a worker hacking the fiber by hand, the first step in turning the plant's stalks into usable strands. Stereo cards like this one were sold in sets to be viewed through a stereoscope, and they gave armchair audiences in the United States a close look at industries in distant colonies. The Philippines was then under American administration, which helped make Manila hemp a familiar commodity in American trade.
