The Wakefield Tower and the Bloody Tower sit side by side in the Tower of London, and this photograph singles out that pairing rather than the castle's more famous White Tower. The Wakefield Tower is the older of the two, a 14th-century drum tower built on the Tower's inner ward, and its name is tied to the Duke of York, who was held there. The Bloody Tower, next to it, takes its name from the legend that the young princes were murdered within its walls, a story that has been linked to the 1480s and Richard III. Taken between 1930 and 1950, the picture shows the fortress as a working royal site that also drew steady crowds of visitors.
