The Royal Exchange was the great meeting place of London's merchants and financiers, and this stereograph records the building at the heart of the City's commerce. The London Stereoscopic Company issued the card as part of its Views of London and vicinity series, made for the parlor stereoscope that was a fixture of middle-class Victorian homes. A fire had destroyed the earlier building in 1838, and the replacement, designed by William Tite, opened in 1844, so the picture shows a comparatively new structure. Seen through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images merge into one three-dimensional view.
