The record for this photoprint rests on an unverified caption card, but it shows bombed London flats from the Second World War. British Combine Photos Ltd issued the picture under number BO 376, and it carries the mark of the Office for Emergency Management in the United States, the wartime agency that gathered and distributed images and information about the war. Much of the damage to London during these years came from German bombing, especially the Blitz of 1940 and 1941, when residential blocks across the city were struck night after night. Images like this circulated widely to show the toll on British civilians.
