The axe and block shown here are the Tower of London's execution block and headsman's axe, objects that drew visitors to the fortress for generations. The Tower held state prisoners for centuries, and several were beheaded on the green outside the White Tower rather than in public, a privilege reserved for those of high rank. Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that issued this stereograph card around 1910, sold such views widely to viewers who could see the scene in three dimensions through a stereoscope. The record's caption is unverified, so the exact date and the precise object shown should be read with that caveat in mind.
