The Palace of Westminster, home of Parliament in London, is the subject here, pictured in a photographic print dated to 1886. The building was rebuilt after a fire in 1834 destroyed most of the old medieval palace, and the Gothic Revival design by Charles Barry, with interiors by Augustus Pugin, was still fairly new when this view was made. Its clock tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben, is among the most recognized landmarks in the city. Because the record gives few specifics beyond the title and date, the image is best read as a document of how the complex looked to a visitor in the mid-1880s.
