The funeral of the American-born painter James McNeill Whistler, who died in London in July 1903, is the subject here. Whistler spent most of his career in Britain, and he was known for his atmospheric paintings, his tonal "Nocturne" series, and his famous 1878 libel case against the critic John Ruskin. This print was made in 1977 by the Library of Congress from a glass negative lent by Mark Fondersmith, so the photograph itself dates from 1903 even though the print is much later. Its title was devised by Library staff, who set the scene in London.
