Ox carts, wharves, and sea walls frame this view of the San Juan waterfront, where a boat landing gives onto a town plaza. The picture dates from the early years of American rule, after the United States took Puerto Rico in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photographic views of places across the world, made it between 1901 and 1903, and its caption card also lists barracks, a reminder of the military presence in the old Spanish port city. The scene shows how goods and people moved between ships and the streets of the capital.
