A group of children and adults stands beneath an arched gateway cut through the old city wall of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Spanish colonial builders raised these walls over several centuries to defend the harbor, and the gates controlled movement into and out of the old town. The card dates to about 1900, just after the United States took control of the island in 1898. It was made by the American Stereoscopic Company of New York, whose paired views were sold for viewing through a stereoscope at home, giving American audiences a close look at newly acquired territory.
